At 8 AM ChST, the center of Super Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) was located by PGUA radar near latitude 14.1N, longitude 146.7E. This was about 130 miles east-northeast of Guam. Storm motion was northwest, 320 degrees, at 7 mph. Storm intensity was 165 mph. .SITUATION OVERVIEW... Super Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) continues to move northwest toward the Marianas, with rain bands of Sinlaku moving south to south- southeast rotating in over the islands, and continuing to bring periods of heavy showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The most recent storm track produced by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) has shifted slightly north but continues to favor the center of Sinlaku passing near or over Tinian and Saipan, potentially north of Saipan. While Sinlaku is forecasted to gradually weaken the next few days, it is expected to cross the Marianas near or over Tinian and Saipan as a Category 4 typhoon. .PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... The more northern trek of Sinlaku to Tinian and Saipan may limit the peak of coastal inundation but inundation of 1 to 3 ft is still expected as surf and wind driven waves increase as tropical storm force winds affect Guam; as such, a Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect. For Rota, if the current forecast track holds, the risk for Typhoon force winds of 75 mph is reduced but not zero. For now the forecast has northerly tropical storm winds around 50 mph to 60 mph with gusts to 70, increasing to 60 to 70 mph with gusts to 85 in the afternoon and then shifting to the northwest and west overnight, with typhoon force winds around 74 mph possible. Winds are then expected to decrease to 55 to 65 mph with gusts to 75 mph Wednesday morning as winds shift southwest and then decrease further to 35 to 45 mph Wednesday night, before dropping to 25 to 35 mph during the day Thursday. For Tinian and Saipan, the current track has Sinlaku shifting further north with passage slightly north of or over Saipan late this evening or tonight.
