The Taos Avalanche Center in Taos has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning. * WHAT...The avalanche danger is currently considered high. Continued snow will fall in the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains through Saturday. Very dangerous avalanche conditions will develop quickly today as the storm progresses. * WHERE...Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area and Columbine Hondo Wilderness above 9000 feet. This does not include ski areas where avalanche hazard reduction measures are performed. * WHEN... In effect from Saturday 6 AM MST to Sunday 6 AM MST. * IMPACTS...Heavy snowfall and winds today will create widespread areas of instability. Both human triggered and natural avalanches are very likely and avalanches large enough to bury or injure a person are expected. Stay off slopes steeper than 30 degrees.
