Well above normal temperatures since the beginning of March have allowed for rapid vegetation and leaf growth across most of the area. This is especially evident west of the Blue Ridge where leafing is 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. Starting today, NWS Baltimore/Washington will begin issuing Frost and Freeze products for all areas along and east of Interstate 81. The median date for beginning Frost/Freeze headlines in these areas is typically April 11. The counties in the Allegheny Mountains have a median start date for spring Frost/Freeze products of May 1-11. If well above normal temperatures continue, an earlier start may be needed.
