As above normal temperatures continue to impact the region, ice coverage across the Great Lakes continues to diminish. Today, the estimated ice coverage for the entire region is at 28 percent. Recently clear skies have provided an unobstructed satellite image of most of the region, allowing to confidently tell where ice remains. Across Lake Superior the lingering ice is isolated to the southern shore with many of the bays/inlets still ice covered. Much of the Straight of Mackinac and areas near Sault Ste. Marie also remain covered. Ice have begun to diminish across northern Lake Michigan, although Green Bay and areas nearest the Straits do still have quite a bit of ice. Moving south on Lake Huron, a large portion of the center part of the lake has opened up with Saginaw Bay still covered. Across Lake Erie much of the western basin has become ice free with the bulk of ice isolated to the central and eastern basins, although becoming thinner. Although spring has arrived recently, winter will nudge back into the area later this week, possibly resulting in the slow growth of ice across the region. The northern Great Lakes will be the most impacted by ice growth. Across the southern portion of the region, continued above average temperatures the next few days will continue to decay the ice with some slow development possible late week. Winds through tomorrow will remain below 20 knots before a robust low increases winds to 20 to 30 knots by mid week. These gusty winds will likely result in the continued breakup of existing ice and drifting of ice that remains.
